Gaia at Rochester Cathedral
Rochester Cathedral has announced the much anticipated programme of events for Luke Jerram’s Gaia when it goes on display from the 24th May – 12th June.
Tickets are now available through the Rochester Cathedral website to see Gaia or attend one of the events. The programme includes a concert by popular Canadian band, The Abrams who are returning to perform at Rochester Cathedral for the 3rd time and an Organ Concert inspired by the Platinum Jubilee.
Rochester Cathedral had record-breaking visitor numbers for the Museum of the Moon, another artwork by Luke Jerram, when it was there in 2020 so advance booking is highly recommended. Free timed tickets are available for visitors during the day while charges apply for evening viewing slots and special events. All tickets can be booked through the Rochester Cathedral website.
Measuring seven metres in diameter, Gaia features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. The imagery was compiled by the Visible Earth series, NASA. The artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet on this scale, floating in three-dimensions. A specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning Composer Dan Jones is played alongside the sculpture. The name comes from Greek Mythology where Gaia is the personification of the Earth.
As part of the programme of events, Rochester Cathedral will be focusing on raising awareness of climate change and the Church of England’s intention to be Net Carbon Zero by 2030. The Church of England has five marks of mission with the fifth being “To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.”
