Funding bid to further transform Chatham High Street

Medway Council is bidding for a share of £675 million funding to further transform Chatham High Street.

The council has submitted an expression of interest to the government’s Future High Streets Fund, which aims to help transform town centres and make them fit for the future, with co-funding to consolidate properties on the high street and improving transport and access into town centres.

The council is hoping that the Future High Streets Fund could unlock £14million which can be invested into Chatham to further economic growth, increase housing, create more jobs and provide a vibrant town centre experience.

Chatham is Medway’s city centre and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. It is steeped in rich military history with the historic dockyard and Fort Amherst. The Brook and Central Theatres attract 130,000 visits a year. Medway is the largest conurbation between London and continental Europe. with a growing population of 276,000. The area is positioned to become the main urban centre for the Thames Estuary and the South East Local Enterprise Partnership area.
